Philippine Air Force T-129 ATAK: A New Era of Defense

The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has recently added a new member to its fleet - the T-129 ATAK attack helicopter. This addition marks a significant milestone in the modernization efforts of the PAF.

The T-129 ATAK

The T-129 ATAK is a twin-engine, tandem seat, multi-role, all-weather attack helicopter based on the Agusta A129 Mangusta platform. It was developed by Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in partnership with Leonardo S.p.A. The helicopter is designed for advanced attack and reconnaissance missions in hot and high environments and rough geography in both day and night conditions.

The T-129 is armed with a variety of guns, rockets, missiles, sensors, and targeting systems. It has a cruising speed of 120 knots and a range of 250 nautical miles.

Acquisition by the PAF

The PAF signed a contract worth USD269 million (around PHP14.9 billion) with Turkish Aerospace Industries (TAI) in 2020 for six T-129 ATAK helicopters. The first pair were delivered on March 9, 2022, while the second pair arrived in December of that same year.

The ATAK helicopters will undergo inspection and test flights before they are formally accepted into the PAF fleet. Once commissioned into service, they will be operated by the PAF’s 15th Strike Wing based in Sangley Point, Cavite for close air support to ground troops, armed surveillance, and reconnaissance missions.

Conclusion

The acquisition of the T-129 ATAK helicopters is a significant step forward in the modernization of the Philippine Air Force. These helicopters will enhance the PAF’s capabilities in territorial defense, aerial surveillance and reconnaissance, counter-insurgency combat operations, and combat support operations. The addition of these advanced helicopters to the PAF’s fleet underscores the Philippines’ commitment to strengthening its defense capabilities.
