"Improving Mathematics Achievement through the Use of Collaborative Learning Strategies: An Action Research Study"

Introduction:
Mathematics is an important subject that is essential for success in many areas of life. However, many students struggle with math, and this can lead to low achievement and a lack of confidence in their abilities. One possible reason for this difficulty is a lack of effective teaching strategies that engage and motivate students to learn math. This action research aims to address this issue by examining the impact of using collaborative learning strategies on mathematics achievement in a grade 4 classroom.

Methodology:
The study will be conducted in a grade 4 classroom at XYZ Elementary School. The participants will consist of 25 students who will be selected based on their math achievement levels and age. The students will be divided into two groups: an experimental group and a control group.

The experimental group will receive instruction using collaborative learning strategies, while the control group will receive traditional instruction without the use of collaborative learning strategies. Both groups will receive the same math lessons and materials, and their achievement will be assessed through pre- and post-tests, as well as ongoing assessments throughout the study.

Data collection and analysis:
The pre- and post-tests will consist of multiple-choice and open-ended questions, and will be administered to both groups at the beginning and end of the study. Ongoing assessments will include weekly quizzes and written responses to math assignments. The data collected from these assessments will be analyzed using descriptive statistics, and will be used to compare the math achievement scores of the two groups.

Expected outcomes:
It is expected that the use of collaborative learning strategies will significantly improve the math achievement of the experimental group compared to the control group. It is also expected that the experimental group will show an increased ability to retain and recall math concepts, as well as an increased ability to apply their knowledge to solve problems.

Conclusion:
The results of this action research will provide valuable insights into the effectiveness of using collaborative learning strategies as a way to improve math achievement in grade 4 students. If the use of collaborative learning strategies is found to be effective, it may be recommended for use in other classrooms and grade levels as a way to enhance student engagement and achievement in math.
